My doctoral thesis was on the spiritual formation of the Christian Community. I wanted to look at how church communities are formed in the presence of Christ, as communities. We never truly live our life of faith alone. We are always surrounded. We are called into a company of the faithful who walk beside us and share our journey.

Thus, while I have had several conversations about what it means for an individual to feel spiritually discouraged, I have always recognised that entire church communities can feel this way as well. Spiritual discouragement can be a corporate experiences as much as an individual one.
